1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine

Caffeine ... the wonderful and glorious drug of America.

*CUE VH1 DRAMA MUSIC* ... ... ... DUN DUN DUN

Is caffeine indeed wonderful? Or is it instead ... evil and salacious.

Well, yesterday for my own information I started tracking my Mountain Dew, Code Red (cherry Mountain Dew) and Live Wire (orange Mountain Dew) intake.

By coincidence, on NPR today the show Stateside aired a piece on caffeine that was fairly interesting. Inspired by this show ... I decided to expand the tracking of my beverage consumption to include all things caffeine ... and maybe eventually everything. I should post the beginning data and spreadsheet by late tomorrow.

DELAY DELAY DELAY

I suppose I should release the sojourn website since I have been working on it in my spare time. The site has many features including BROKEN LINKS ... and ... CODING ERRORS! But seriously, it is in a development stage ... so just don't critique to heavily. :)

I will eventually finish the Phoenix Road Trip portion of the site and I know I will also end up changing the design a bit. Oh, and I want to point a domain to it as well ... but not until we decide on the official name for the site. For now, it works and you can see all the pretty pictures.

GO LOOK AT IT. http://peregrin.us/sojourn/

Fahrenheit 9/11

Fellow bloggers Daniel and Phildo, a few other people and Amy and I are going to a BIASED AND EVIL LEFT WING MOVIE THAT IS ONLY BEING RELEASED BECAUSE OF A POLITICAL AGENDA AND IS OF COURSE NOT PATRIOTIC. Actually, this movie is just Nazi propaganda ...

Anyway, back to a little world I like to call REALITY. I am hopeful that this film, Fahrenheit 9/11, will be funny and not didactic. Since we are going opening night maybe there will even be protestors at the theatre!

History

Scaled Composites has done it. They've made history by being the first private company to put a civilian man, Mike Melvill, into space. The United States now has a realized and operational commercial SPACEPORT.

Does this mean that tomorrow we will be colonizing the Moon or Mars? No. However, this is a huge and important step that hopefully ushers in a new era of fascination and innovation regarding Space. Let the race begin.

Thanks to Phildo for pointing these freaks out.

The use of 'M$'

STOP. Stop using 'M$' to symbolize Microsoft. In 1998 using 'M$' was sarcastically funny ... but not any more. I have no respect for people who use 'M$' and in fact, I generally discount their opinions. Damn idiots.

To Much

Ok, I have WAY to much to talk about. I have been putting topics off in sort of a 'rainy day' reserve. Basically, I was holding out commenting on certain items until I had nothing else to comment about. Alas, I need to get a few out of the way.

THE PISTONS.
Wow. I usually don't watch NBA games unless they involve the Pistons or it is NBA Finals time ... this year ... we have both. The Pistons are rampaging over the L.A. Lakers. Last night they smoked the Lakers by 20 points ... the Lakers looked like old men. All I can say is, damn.

HIKING AND THE LIKE.
Amy and I are headed up to Sleeping Bear Dunes this weekend for a day hike of around 6 to 10 miles and also a few geocaches. How far we go depends on how long our moderately comfortable footwear lasts. We are bringing a camera ... so expect pictures.

G5, G5, G5, G5 ... not the G8, thankfully.
Whoa. The new Apple G5 Power Mac is hot, though probably not literally ... BECAUSE IT IS LIQUID COOLED. This thing is already modded for you. I think I am going to apply for a federal grant to buy one.

Anniversary

1980 June Ninth. 6.9.80. I was born into a great family and a mediocre world. Tough love and independence that's what this world is about survival.

Do you look forward or backward when your birthday arrives? I know where my focus lies

Yesterday was the anniversary of the day of my birth; my birthday. 24. Mid-twenties? Nah. Late-Early-Twenties ;) I am a year older and a year tougher. The last year has been brilliant. Love, adventure, spectacular sojourns and of course knowledge.

If you, the reader, decide to leave me a birthday wish please leave the date of your birth as well. Do I want your birth date for sheer curiosity? Nay, only to send you an equal wishing on your birthday.

I must also extend thanks to my family and my friends (online and offline). The gifts and wishes of the day were wonderful however, the year of relationship was even greater. Thank You.

Just Plain Cool

It is not that I am an Apple geek; I don't own one. It is not that I will buy one of them; I probably won't. And it is not that I am a gadget freak; wait ... yes it is.

The Apple Airport Express is just plain cool. Handy form factor. It is an 802.11g repeater w/ bridging capability. It has USB, 10/100 Ethernet, an AUDIO MINI JACK. What? Stream music anywhere in the house? Yeah, exactly. Oh, and the little thing is only $129.99.

If I ever get an 802.11g network up and secured ... I will probably add one of these just for the hell of it.

**EDIT**2004.06.10 00:30
In reference to "It is not that I will buy one of them; I probably won't."

I should have added "unless I am ever able to afford a dual proc G5." ;)

Playoff Hockey

Damn. Calgary lost.

Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup last night in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals. There is only one reason why Tampa Bay winning the Stanley Cup is acceptable... 22-year veteran and Tampa Bay captain Dave Andreychuk has finally won his first (and probably only) Stanley Cup. If I were a betting man, I 'd say Andreychuk will retire within the next month.

Thousands of hits, 82 games and four best-of-7 playoff series later ... Tampa Bay earned the Cup. Do they deserve it? Absolutely. Anyone team who wins this heralded Cup deserves the glory. Am I happy they won? Not really. I was looking forward to the Cup being back in the hands of a Canadian team. Oh well, back to supporting the Red Wings.

DAT

I was going to write about my experience at the opening midnight IMAX showing of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Potter grasped the number one spot at the box office this weekend leaving Shrek II in the dust. However, I have changed my plan ... instead, I am going to write about The Day After Tomorrow and my opening weekend experience with that movie.

TDAT was a mediocre movie. There... my full review in one sentence. The dialogue was cookie cutter, the SFX were great, the plot did not exist, the premise was intriguing and the movie was... mediocre. I don’t feel like I wasted two hours of my life staring at people freezing. I do feel I was entertained for two hours; entertained with tornadoes, a cold storm and a giant wall of water.

There were two MAJOR plot lines that were left unresolved. Frankly, this lack of the gathering of loose ends bothered me most.

I give this movie exactly 2.5 out of 5 ... whatever. 5 stars, 5 popcorn buckets, 5 smiles. Rent it, definitely. However, don’t waste $9.50 a ticket UNLESS you are a disaster junky or need a one hour adrenaline rush and one hour nap.

Gas

I hate paying for unleaded basic 87 gas. Giving 'Big Oil' my money just irritates me. I can justify $9.50 a person to go see The Day After Tomorrow even though I know the money is going to another 'Big' ... the MPAA.

Am I going to stop going to see movies on opening weekend? Probably not ...

Am I going to stop driving my car ? No. Where I am, walking distances, car pooling and public transportation is at best, mediocre.

However, am I going to drastically REDUCE the number of miles I drive? You're damn right, I am.

$2.149 a gallon? Bah. Not worth it.

Yes, I know that $2.149 is inexpensive compared to what Europe pays. So? This isn't Europe.

Yes, I know reduction is a meager alternative to buying a hybrid or seeking out and investing in alternate fuels. However, I don't have time or $$$ for those other options right now ... what I can do ... right this very moment ... is stop driving so damn much. Consolidate trips, car pool a little and hopefully prevent one extra dime from reaching some 'Big Oil' executive.
